Before the scene
The year is 1928 . Location: New York and North Bergen, New Jersey , a borough of New York west of the Hudson River.
James J. Braddock, "Jimmy" Braddock is a professional boxer, he fought successfully Madison Square Garden and lives with his family - Mae, its Mrs. , Howard and Jay, his sons and his youngest, Rosemarie "Rosie " - in a nice house in North Bergen, a suburb of New York's Peninsula.
a time warp us back to New York in the Thirties. The Black Friday 1929 had triggered the Great Depression.
unemployment, grinding poverty, the beautiful house is in the past, the family of five lives in a one bedroom apartment a decaying tenement. The room is more of a shack, as a dwelling. Three children sleep in a bed.
Braddock gets rarely fights. He tried to bring his family as a day laborer at the unload and reload cargo on the docks.
There is a lack of everything. The family suffers from hunger, the bills can not be paid, the electricity is turned off. Despite falling temperatures no money for firewood is available. The coming winter will make it very difficult for the family.
25th September 1933.
James Braddock rises despite a weak (not Sufficiently healed) in healed fracture of the metacarpal in the ring.
He needs the stock market (combat reward), fifty dollars to pay the debt for the bare necessities. The Logical happens.

A right can be just the bone fragment in his hand. Still, he wants to be the scheduled number of laps. The fight was booed, the referee stops.
Braddock get the stock (combat reward) is not. The fight does not take place as. The Boxing Association, he shall withdraw the license as a professional boxer.
Braddock is the only breadwinner of the family. He must be healthy, to keep the family afloat. A broken hand, the withdrawal of combat permission - every money-making impossible.
It is late evening. Braddock's hand was in plaster. He comes home and declare his wife's situation. Hartz IV is unknown, unemployment insurance (unemployment benefit) as well.
Without money, no wood for the Oven, eat without money no electricity, no money, nothing, no milk for the children. The family is left with nothing.
The scene
insert on two hands, slender delicate hands of women. You sew a piece of fabric. The hands belong Mae Braddock, Jim's wife.
We can see, Mae wool skirt and jacket with wool. It's probably cold in the apartment. The camera moves up to Mae's face. At the same moment she turns around to the door. She heard a noise.
view of the apartment door. The door is also the front door. For a moment we see the poverty of the stay.
